Kauaʻi Community Science Center has run the KCSC Seabird Searching Program for three years at Alexander & Baldwin, Inc’s Port Allen Commercial Property.
At KCSC one of our main objectives is to put students in the lead and provide project based and career connected learning experiences. The KCSC Seabird Searching Program has accomplished this over the last three years by employing 23 high school and college students, and three students have completed two or more seasons of work. Since 2020 our team has rescued a total of nine seabirds in Port Allen, (14 decoys in 2021) and recovered three deceased birds. In addition, our team members also rescued four seabirds off of work shifts in Waimea and Poipu during the 2022 season. We are so proud of the great work of our team over the years and their commitment to the seabirds both on and off the job.
We are very grateful for all that the program has brought to our organization and the support from Alexander & Baldwin, Inc, but we do not have enough operational capacity to support the initiative moving forward. We are excited to see the program grow and thrive under the management of Kauai Wildlife Control, LCC.
Providing effective, humane and environmentally acceptable methods of wildlife control services for the island of Kauai. Protecting residential, commercial, and agricultural investments.
We are a fully insured family owned business with 35+ years of wildlife control experience. We fully comply with all state laws and regulations which includes the acquiring of proper permits and accurate/timely reporting
On September 12, 2023 we enjoyed another great presentation from Dr. Andre Raine, Science Director of Archipelago Research & Conservation, https://archipelagoresearchandconservation.com/ in preparation for the 2023 Seabird Searching Season.
Every year since 2020 this informational session with Dr. Andre Raine has helped to inform and prepare seabird searchers about the amazing endangered seabirds on Kauai that are the focus of the seabird searching program from September 15th - December 15th.
The KCSC Seabird Searching Program is making a difference for Kauai's endangered seabirds and creating an enriching experience for the high school and college students doing the work.
This KCSC Seabird Searching logo was designed by Asa Chelius, senior at Island School and a KCSC Seabird Searcher. Thanks, Asa!
