Mahalo for participating in our 2023 KCSC Robotics Summer Camp!
2023 Robotics Summer Camp led by: Kathleen and Joveline Alvarez, KCSC Student Interns, along with other student mentors from robotics competition teams on Kaua'i.
Additional Student Mentors: Marc & Martian Binonwangan, Robotics Cybersaints & Kauaibots, Emman Carinio, Waimea High School Robotics
In this camp, students engage in hands-on experiences that utilize and build 21st Century Skills like critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and creativity.
The hands-on robotics experiences include virtual reality simulations and building/programming robots in a competition-style atmosphere! Each student participant is paired with a student mentor throughout the entire camp! We are incredibly excited to share our skills and enthusiasm for robotics with students in our community.
Check out some highlights from our 2023 Summer Camp below!
Kathleen is an alumnus of Waimea High School and currently attends Minot State University majoring in Communication Sciences and Disorders. After her bachelor's, she plans to do a 4-year doctorate (Au.D.) with a dream of becoming an Audiologist. During her 8th grade year at Moloka’i Middle School, she took part in Team 434 Moloka’i Robotics and competed in the VEX IQ Robotics at the state and world levels. Her family then moved to Kaua’i and from her sophomore to senior year, she was the President of the WHS FTC Robotics Club. Kathleen founded the KCSC Robotics Summer Camp in 2021 and is passionate about STEM, robotics, and engineering .
Joveline is a rising senior at Waimea High School. Her interest in robotics and engineering began in elementary school, on Moloka’i through VEX IQ robotics. Since moving to Kaua’i in 2018, Joveline has become an active member of FTC team 17445 at Waimea High School, is the current Waimea Robotics Club President and is the mechanical team lead for the Kauaibots FRC team. Joveline has also recently become an FRC Dean’s List Award Winner at the 2023 FIRST Championship in Houston. She is one of the 10 selected from hundreds of finalists and is Hawaii’s first FRC Dean’s List Winner in over a decade! Joveline is part of the KCSC Industry Partnership Program and has supported the robotics demonstrations at KCSC HOTspot events.
Martian is an upcoming high school senior attending Kapaa High School. Starting in 2017, Martian has participated in numerous FIRST robotics programs. Today, he is the captain of FTC Team 13088, The Cyber Saints, an award-winning FIRST Tech Challenge team that has competed in several state and world championships over the years. He is also the captain of FRC Team 2465, The Kauaibots, a FIRST Robotics Competition that has competed well in both California and Hawaii-based regional competitions. Throughout his robotics career, Martian has also participated in several independent robotics programs in the Kapa'a community. In 2023, during the FIRST World Championship in Houston, Martian received the FIRST Tech Challenge Dean's List Award, a prestigious award given to a select number of students who have served as leaders in their communities and exemplary role models that embody the mission and core values of FIRST, inspiring others to both participate and become leaders in the STEM field.
Marc is currently attending Kapaa High School and is an upcoming sophomore. He has experience in the engineering field competing in both FRC and FTC for the past five years. Being a member of the CyberSaints and Kauaibots respectively. Although still being one of the youngest members on the teams, he still makes his “mark” in all areas. This year he helped integrate social media into the FRC team, allowing our presence to be noticed more worldwide. He is also very experienced in CAD, in which he is the lead on both teams. Feel free to ask him any design questions!
Emman is switching gears for his junior year at Waimea High. His interest in robotics first sparked with the First Lego League in Ele'ele Elementary, when he was on the Hekebots team. Joining the WHS FTC/WHSJROTC VEX Robotics Club in his freshman year relit his flame for mechanical engineering, and through robotics, he learned and is still learning more about how to lead a team and how to communicate well. Although he isn't as experienced as the others, he will do his best to give any advice you need.
Kaye is a rising junior at Waimea High School. Her interests are in the health field but has been exposed to robotics throughout her life because of her sisters. She moved to Kauai with her family in her sixth grade year and is currently a member of HOSA and the LEO club at WHS. Kaye is a rising co-captain for her Air-Riflery team, making it to Nationals in Arizona and Oahu multiple times and won first place in the State JROTC Championships and Interscholastic championships.
