At KCSC our goal is that all of our content and activities are student led and student driven as much as possible. We have an overall KCSC INTERNSHIP PROGRAM that encompasses all of the programming that students participate in at KCSC.
KCSC INTERNSHIP PROGRAMS include programs like the KCSC SEABIRD SEARCHING PROGRAM, KCSC INDUSTRY PARTNERSHIP PROGRAM, and STUDENTS SHARING SCIENCE that KCSC Interns participate in. As well as the PROFESSIONAL AND LEARNERS COLLABORATIVE that is a collective of professionals and subject matter experts that support KCSC Interns.
KCSC INTERNSHIP PROJECTS are the individual projects that KCSC Interns develop based on their interests and needs. KCSC supports students by connecting them with the professionals, subject matter experts and the resources that they need to complete these unique projects. The outcomes from the projects become content, activities and exhibits that the students and KCSC share with the community.
Some example of these are the "SHE GO!" TREADMILL and the KCSC ROBOTICS SUMMER CAMP
Kauai Community Science Center is excited to continue the KCSC Student Internship Program during the 2023-2024 school year.
Students ages 12 and older are eligible for our 2023-2024 Student Internship.
Here is a list of some of our Collaborators that KCSC and Interns will be working with.
KCSC STUDENT INTERNSHIP EXPECTATIONS
BE A PART OF BUILDING KAUAI COMMUNITY SCIENCE CENTER
As a young organization there are so many ways that you can support KCSC through exploring your interests. These are just a few ideas and we know students can come up with many more.
In person as possible & In Accordance with Social Distancing Guidelines
Kauai Community Science Center is based in Phase 2 of the West Kauai Technology & Visitor Center in Waimea.
Hear from some of our 2021 KCSC Interns about their internship experience. This video itself was a KCSC Internship Project, created by Kathleen and Joveline Alvarez, both KCSC Interns, pictured below. Their video project exemplifies KCSC's objective of student led programming and content development. Mahalo to Kathleen and Joveline and all of our student interns for your hard work and commitment!
TO CELEBRATE OUR FIRST COHORT OF AMAZING KCSC INTERNS WE RECOGNIZED SOME OF THEM AT OUR FIRST KCSC INTERN SOCIAL IN THE SUMMER OF 2021.
ALL OF OUR KCSC INTERNS ARE AMAZING AND THESE THREE WERE ESPECIALLY SPECIAL. CONGRATULATIONS & MAHALO TO THEM ALL!

Braelyn, our only graduating senior is a very accomplished and outstanding young woman. Braelyn was always there to help and participate in KCSC events and activities, amassing more than 70 hours of volunteer time with KCSC. Braelyn also collaborated with Rich O’Reilly to design and build an AMAZING Senior STEM Project, a pediatric treadmill, "SHE GO!" which she shared with students at three virtual STEAM Nights and also at KCSC HOTspot events. Braelyn embodies all of the qualities that we hope to model, instill and perpetuate through our work at KCSC. We wish Braelyn the very best in her bright and exciting future!
Kalia consistently participated and always has a great attitude, is eager to learn and contribute. Kalia created the amazing virtual escape room activity, “Fish Far From Home” for our STREAMing with Aloha program. Kalia also provided 3D printing demonstrations during STREAMing with Aloha, at our first virtual STEAM Night and participated at multiple KCSC HOTspots. At KCSC our goal is that activities, events and content are student led and Kalia embodied this through her participation. We are so thankful for Kalia’s many contributions to KCSC and for sharing her 21st Century Skills with us.
From the very start Kathleen jumped in and was quick to contribute and make a difference whenever asked. Kathleen has only missed volunteering at one of the 19 KCSC HOTspot events! Kathleen helped us to feature the Waimea Robotics team at KCSC HOTspots and also led robotics demonstrations during STREAMing with Aloha, for all three virtual STEAM Nights and multiple KCSC HOTspot events. Kathleen also designed and made masks for the WHS robotics team using the KCSC vinyl cutter and heat press. Kathleen has contributed so much to KCSC and serve as an amazing role model for all of us.
Corey Agena, Braelyn Cayaban, Briana Apo and Kalia Jopling were KCSC Interns in 2020 - 2021. We are thankful for their dedication, contributions and the difference that they made for KCSC. We look forward learning about their future accomplishments and are grateful and honored to have them as KCSC Intern Alumni.
"I joined the KCSC internship program to gain experience in an internship setting. So far it has been a great experience with all of the amazing equipment and people. I am excited to see how KCSC and our hotspot impacts the west side community."
Corey is currently a junior studying Mechanical Engineering at the California Polytechnic State University at San Luis Obispo in San Luis Obispo, California.
“An internship at Kauai Community Science Center allows me to connect with the community and gain science literacy to further my education in the STEM field. I look forward to working with many of the KCSC collaborators who will help me gain knowledge in the STEM world. My goal is to contribute to the community while continuing to practice virtual learning during these unique times of COVID-19”.
Braelyn is currently a freshman at Colorado College in Colorado Springs, Colorado
Kalia Jopling was a KCSC Intern during 2021 and one of the KCSC & Kauai Makerspace 3D Printing Club Instructors group. Kalia shared her 3D printing skils at KCSC HOTspot events as well as KCSC Virtual STEAM Night and duirng the STREAMING with Aloha Program. She event created this amazing virtial escape room that also shares information about Hawaiian Fishponds. Kalia is in the class of 2025 at Hawaii Technology Academy and we are grateful for her many contributions to KCSC.
Briana Apo participated in the KCSC Seabird Searching Program and also the KCSC & Kauai Makerspace 3D Printing Instructors group during 2020-2021. Her goal was to grow her CAD (computer aided design) and 3D printing skills. She she certainly accomplished that and shared her 3D printing skills at many KCSC HOTspot events and with the Boys & Girls Club in Waimea. Briana would even do "on-demand" special order prints for students at the KCSC HOTspot events. Briana is in the class of 2022 at Waimea High School and we greatly appreciate all of Briana's contributions to KCSC.
All KCSC interns are encouraged to explore their interests and develop a unique project based on their interests. Check out these KCSC Internship Projects.
