A collaboration between Kaua'i students, Kaua'i Industry professionals and STEAM* professionals from the mainland to co-develop fun, relevant, hands-on STEAM content for the community.
* Science, Technology, Engineering, Art & Culture and Math
KCSC Industry Partnership Program will bring together a diverse project team to do exciting work.
WHO?
Student volunteers will be part of a project team with professionals from Kauai Island Utility Cooperative, KIUC, KCSC, STEAM professionals from Sciencenter in Ithaca, NY and STE(A)M Truck powered by Community Guild in Atlanta, GA.
WHAT?
Kauai Community Science Center was awarded a County of Kauai Innovation Grant 2021-2022 to support STEAM learning and 21st century skills development.
KCSC Student Interns and staff along with a team of professionals will meet over the course of the school year to co-develop STEAM content (activities, exhibits and events) directly related to KIUC's West Kauai Energy Project, WKEP, the first ever Solar + Pumped Storage Hydro Project to move Kaua'i beyond 80% renewable energy generation and meet more than 25% of its electricity needs.
The KCSC Intern team will collaborate to determine the topics, types of activities, exhibits and/or events and also coordinate with KIUC to meet their outreach needs through the distribution of the STEAM content.
The co-developed STEAM content will be shared with students, teachers and/or the broader community to support Kauai Community Science Center's Core Values to increase access to science, grow science literacy, promote climate change awareness and create a safe and respectful place. This STEAM content will be incredibly relevant as it is developed with local subject matter experts and led by Kauai Students. In addition we have mainland science center and mobile science experts to ensure the quality and support design and execution of the content.
By working directly with professionals students will learn about KIUC and careers at KIUC from the people who know them best. Students will also gain experience in the important 21st century skills of collaboration, communication, critical thinking and creativity through being part of this project team. The KCSC Industry Partnership Program will also be a great experience for student to list on a job or college applications.
Moving forward KCSC plans to grow this program and include more Kauai businesses as KCSC Industry Partners. We appreciate that Kauai Island Utility Cooperative, KIUC, a nationally recognized leader in renewable energy production is supporting KCSC as the inaugural KCSC Industry Partner.
WHEN
This program runs from April 2021 - April 2022.

KIUC is a not-for-profit generation, transmission and distribution cooperative owned by the members it serves. Headquartered in Lihue, Hawaii, the cooperative serves 33,000 electric accounts on the island of Kauai. KIUC is a nationally recognized leader in the use of renewable energy and is committed to using solar, biomass and hydropower to produce at least 70 percent of the island's electricity by 2030.
STE(A)M Truck is the award-winning program from Community Guilds designed to help eliminate inequities in the local systems and catalyze transformation across all areas of education. We are a growing fleet of mobile innovation labs that are designed to pull kids, and their teachers, out of their comfort zones and give them the opportunity to engage, create and learn using STEAM-driven curriculum and real tools and technologies.
The Sciencenter, a non-profit hands-on science museum in Ithaca, New York, grew out of a volunteer-run science program at a local elementary school. Founded in 1983, the Sciencenter operated from storefronts for nearly a decade.Today, the Sciencenter is a nationally recognized museum, hosting 100,000 guests in Ithaca each year and reaching over 1.5 million guests worldwide through our traveling exhibitions and outreach programs.
