MAHALO to everyone who joined our Climate Connect Virtual Reality World Building Showcase at the Waimea Public Library on Wednesday, September 6th from 5:00pm - 7:00pm!
We were happy to present the AMAZING virtual worlds created by Kauaʻi student world builders who have been part of the Kauaʻi Community Science Center Climate Connect Virtual Reality Program this year. These students have been learning about virtual reality world-building from local professionals, Nani Holroyd and Keoni Takekawa, founders of Kauaʻi DEV since January. Now is your chance to see their creations, learn more about the program and experience the technology.

KCSC CLIMATE CONNECT VIRTUAL REALITY PROGRAM
WHAT IS THE KCSC CLIMATE CONNECT VIRTUAL REALITY PROGRAM?
Over a timespan of 5 months, in this multi-day workshop, students will be introduced to Virtual Reality and explore the many ways it can be used to tell stories and inspire change. They will learn the basics of virtual reality world building while participating in a collaborative group project.
Once they have the basics down everyone will have the opportunity to build their own world in Virtual Reality. They will be able to choose any topic of their choice. With support on their topic from an industry partner and in-person coaching from local VR developers, they will learn how to create a virtual world that they can share with others to tell a unique story of their own.

- Students develop a project on any topic they choose.
- KCSC supports students by finding subject matter experts to support students to explore their interests and build their projects.
MAKE A CONNECTION TO CLIMATE
- Students will also make a "CLIMATE CONNECT", connecting their project idea to climate.
- No matter the interest there is a way to connect it to climate and increase awareness on what we can all do to "MAKE A DIFFERENCE" for the climate and our environment.
- The content created by students will be shared back with the community and also promote climate change awareness.

Kaua'i Island Utility Cooperative, KIUC, our AMAZING utility cooperative offers the SMART HUB app where you can monitor your electricity usage and find ways to reduce your utility bill too. This is a great way to make a difference!
RECYCLE!
The County Recycling Office funds and administers residential recycling programs, educates about waste diversion opportunities, and provides technical assistance to commercial agencies. The Recycling Rate on Kaua'i is 43%, which is above the national average of 35%. Let's recycle more and get this rate even higher!
JOIN THE KAUAI ALOHA+ CHALLENGE!
Your actions make a difference! Join the Kaua‘i Aloha+ Challenge to be part of the movement/change. The Aloha+ Challenge: He Nohona ‘Ae’oia is a statewide commitment to build a healthier and more sustainable future for our islands. Through five years of collaboration on the Aloha+ Challenge, Hawai‘i was recognized by the United Nations as a one of the world’s first sustainability hubs and a global leader on the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The Kaua'i Aloha+ Challenge is our local response to meet the state’s goals and allows our community to take action today. PARTICIPATE IN KAUAI'S CLIMATE PLAN
The effects of a changing climate are all around us, we must act now to prepare for it. The general plan directs agencies to prepare for the impacts of climate change. Therefore, the County is developing a Climate Adaptation Plan using a community process and the best available science. The plan will present a framework of actions to ensure people, places, and natural and built systems are able to adapt to and mitigate climate change.

This logo represents commitment from the people of Kauai to care for our planet.
Kauai is surrounded by precious resources, teachers and students: They work with KCSC as climate scientists to connect how everyday activities have an impact the Earth’s climate.
Trees: Important resources for providing oxygen and makes our air quality better
The sun: The most important resource for generating weather patterns, creating energy for plants, food and all living things. Without the sun, Earth would be just a lifeless rock.
An energy efficient home: These homes can provide an opportunity to save money and reduce emissions of greenhouse gases.
Fish: A natural resources for food and is a vital part of the ocean’s ecosystem. THE
Ocean: As an Island, we are surrounded by the ocean. It basically effects our way of life. It’s a source of food, entertainment, it influences weather patterns, and can be a source of energy.
Kalo (Taro): I included Kalo or Taro to represent Hawaiian Culture because it is an important staple food for the Hawaiian people. Today all cultures enjoy taro in many different ways.
A solar panel: On Kauai we see the sun almost everyday of the year. Solar power is a great way to create energy with emitting carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.
The Hokule'a: The Hokule’a completed a worldwide voyage a year ago called Malama Honua, which means “to care for our Earth”. the purpose of the voyage was to practice the tradition to venture beyond the horizontal connect with others on how to best preserve environmental resources for the future.
Wind: Another important resource and alternative for producing energy.
An energy efficient car: This mode of transportation doesn’t let out as much emissions as a regular car.
Recycle bin: Reduces the amounts of trash that end up in the landfill. Also reduces the amount of marine debris.
Bicycle: Another mode of green transportation
Mount Waiale'ale: We are fortunate to have the wettest spot on Earth on our island. Mount Waiale’ale produces an abundant amount of fresh water for the residents of Kauai.
Fun fact: Notice the pineapple on the computers that replaces an apple to represent a fruit from Hawaii.
